The File
The working-class base of the century-old labor parties moved to their opponents in the same decade on both sides of the Atlantic. This file documents the movement in certified election data and the economic-exposure research behind it.
The Documented Record
Ballotpedia's canonical list identifies 206 Pivot Counties carried by Obama in 2008 and 2012 and by Trump in 2016, with Trump's average margin at 11.43 points after Obama margins of 12.23 and 8.22. [DOCUMENTED]
Autor, Dorn, and Hanson's 2013 American Economic Review study documents that Chinese import competition explains a substantial share of the decline in US manufacturing employment in exposed local labor markets. [HIGH]
The House of Commons Library GE2019 briefing records dozens of long-held Labour Red Wall seats falling to the Conservatives in December 2019. [DOCUMENTED]
US exit poll series across 2016 to 2024 show non-college voters shifting toward Republicans by double digits over the period. [HIGH]
What the Record Does Not Establish
A circulated claim that 195 of 206 Pivot Counties deepened their Trump vote by 18.5 points in 2024 could not be verified against any transparent, citable calculation and is excluded from this record. The realignment is documented at the seat and county level; the precise 2024 depth figure awaits a published methodology.
