Four decades of polling across Western democracies tell one story: the institutions that ask for trust have been losing it, steadily, measurably, and across borders. This file compiles the long-run datasets. The numbers are the argument.

The Documented Record

Gallup's governance series measured 40 percent of Americans expressing trust in the federal government to handle domestic problems in its September 2022 reading, among the lowest in the series. [DOCUMENTED]

Gallup's media series measured 28 percent of Americans with a great deal or fair amount of trust in mass media in its latest reading, at the bottom of the five-decade series. [DOCUMENTED]

Pew's 1958-to-2025 series shows 20 percent of Americans trusting the federal government to do what is right always or most of the time, near the historic low. [DOCUMENTED]

The 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer records government trusted by 49 percent and media by 47 percent globally, the two least-trusted institutions it measures. [DOCUMENTED]

What the Record Does Not Establish

The record establishes the depletion, not its cause. Each dataset measures a different institution with a different instrument, and the compilation does not establish that a single mechanism drives all of them. The Accumulated Betrayal Index reads these series as one ledger; that reading is the analytical claim of The Room Upstairs, not a finding of any polling house.
